Initially Dave believes that the boys are both gay, but it is later revealed to the audience that while Larry is not gay, Kenny has a secret crush on Larry. Dave, and to a lesser extent Vicky, often treat Larry's flamboyancy with wary eyes. The youngest child, the pubescent 14-year-old Mike , must deal with issues such as masturbation, dating and underage gambling. His character is portrayed as tougher and more cynical than Larry's.
Season 1 Episodes
Dave and Vicky have a big fight while working with an attorney on their living wills. Vicky's plan for a living will meets with some resistance from Dave, and a bitter fight ensues, leaving the kids wondering if they'll all end up in divorce court. Kenny becomes a member of the family, while Dave fights to get into a new office after a fellow co-worker suddenly passes. When Dave agrees to take Larry and Kenny to a comic-book convention, he finds that it goes beyond just dropping them off at the event. Meanwhile, Vicky attempts to change Hillary's mind regarding spending the night at a boy's house.

Money crunch time hits Dave's household and he places the kids under strict allowance, which prompts them to come up with ways of making more money. When Vicki wants new boots, she gives Dave a taste of his own medicine with cheaper beer. Larry and his friend, Kenny are forced into separation by their fathers when the two adults argue over their adjacent property line. After reluctantly agreeing to buy Hillary a car of her own, Dave and Vicky keep her busy running errands all the time through a car contract.

He is often portrayed as insensitive and cynical, and sometimes as a paranoid, overprotective and hypocritical bigot. Dave is constantly scolded and insulted by Larry for always picking on him. It is established toward the end of season one that Dave is the way he is because he had a father who constantly badgered him. Dave's wife Vicky is an attractive Italian-American Catholic part-time receptionist at a doctors' office. Generally levelheaded, she usually spends her time dealing with Dave's unreasonable behavior, but can be quite obnoxious herself.
Larry wears Dave's jacket to school, and ends up getting suspended after marijuana is discovered in the pocket. When Kenny comes out of the closet, Dave encourages him to tell his parents. Dave and Vicky encourage Hillary to apply to colleges, but she has plans to be a pop singer. Elsewhere, Dave meddles with Larry's campaign to be chess-club president. Kenny and his boyfriend are barred from attending the Sadie Hawkins dance. When Dave protests, Principal Fink learns Kenny is living with the Golds and threatens to notify child services. Larry reveals to his parents that he suffers from Social Anxiety Disorder, so Dave and Vicky try to put him on medication, but Larry refuses and accuses them of wanting to change who he is. Meanwhile, Dave is convinced that Hillary intends to lose her virginity on prom night, so Vicky ends up giving her the "sex talk."

2T7619Thinking that Hillary will be grateful, Dave takes the blame when she gets pulled over for reckless driving while she's taking driving lessons. However, Hillary isn't grateful at all when this leads Dave to be arrested for DUI and goes to court to try and settle things, because he forgot that he had a couple of beers before leaving the house. Vicky, meanwhile, forgets to register Larry for Shakespeare camp, putting Larry in an awkward situation, while Dave and Mike take up online poker. The show ran for two seasons, but was not renewed for a third season. Dave is conflicted about whether he should tell Vicky's mom about her fiancé's indiscretions.
An all-too-familiar episode in sit-com plots, as the kids are returning to school. But when Dave and Vicky plan on re-claiming the house as their own during a quick lunch, they catch Hillary skipping and hiding out at home. Larry tries out a new personality, and Mike plans on dumping his girlfriend, which screws up Dave's plans on a friendship with the girlfriend's father. After a car accident, Dave and Vicky decide to look over their living wills again, and ask their friends Jeff and Mindy to become their children's legal guardians should anything happen to them.
Dave thinks he sees Hillary in a "Girls Gone Crazy" video, however, he's relieved when it turns out he's mistaken. But he is completely freaked at being turned on by girls Hillary's age, though. So he turns to Vicky for inspiration after he throws out all of his "visual aids," and it begins to tire her out. Dave accuses an incensed Hillary of cheating on her SATs after she gets a surprisingly high score. Hillary dupes her parents when she introduces them to a classmate she’s pretending to date, but ends up going out with a much older guy. Meanwhile, Larry gets addicted to Vicky’s nicotine gum and Dave catches Vicky smoking.
A music executive wants to meet with Larry after hearing some songs he uploaded online. Vicky discovers it was Dave's pot and tells him to join Pot Smoker Anonymous, where the principal that suspended him is there. Dave tries to get Larry and Mike to strengthen their relationship as brothers; Hillary tries to get a blind guy interested in her. Mike shows Dave Hillary's video blog on which she mentions all family members except Dave. Hillary takes matters into her own hands when Mike goes to her in search of illegal drugs. Dave realizes how he looks when he thinks he spots his own daughter in a just-received dirty movie.
Dave refuses to take a wine-appreciation course with Vicky, who fears they are in a rut; Hillary offends Dave by not mentioning him in her video blog. President Bartlet is fighting a war on two fronts as he tries to rescue hostages in Colombia and deal with explaining to his wife why he's breaking his word to her by running for a 2nd term.
