In promoting the "myth of white self-sufficiency," the "Little House" books rewrite history American Masters

This digital version features Garth Williams’s classic illustrations, which appear in vibrant full color on a full-color device and in rich black-and-white on all other devices. In the summer, the family goes visiting more often. The discontent between Laura and Mary culminates in a whipping for Laura. Pa is out longer hours and tired when he comes home, and Ma makes cheese and also some hats.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

The little log house was almost buried in snow. Great drifts were bankedagainst the walls and windows, and in the morning when Pa opened thedoor, there was a wall of snow as high as Laura's head. Pa took theshovel and shoveled it away, and then he shoveled a path to the barn, where the horses and the cows were snug and warm in their stalls.

Aunt Ruby's dress was wine-colored calico, covered all over with afeathery pattern in lighter wine color. It buttoned with gold-coloredbuttons, and every button had a little castle and a tree carved on it. Laura looked at him all the time she was eating her hasty pudding, because she had heard Pa say to Ma that he was wild. The sunshine came inthrough the sparkling window panes, and everything was large andspacious and clean.

“Darker aspects of the material come forth.” Quite true. As I reread the novels myself, I found myself identifying not so much with Laura as with Ma and Pa, while taking greater notice of the more forbidding touches just beyond the awareness of the children. National Education Association named the novel one of its ""Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children"". In 2012, it was ranked number 19 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal – the first of three Little House books in the Top 100. "Then they raised their heads and looked at each other. The fawn steppedover and stood beside the doe. They stood there together, looking at thewoods and the moonlight. Their large eyes were shining and soft. One night when he came in from doing the chores Pa said that aftersupper he would go to his deer-lick and watch for a deer.

Setting

"Which do you like best, Aunt Lotty," Mary asked, "brown curls, orgolden curls?" Ma had told them to ask that, and Mary was a very goodlittle girl who always did exactly as she was told. "Your hair is curled beautifully, and Lotty iscoming. Run meet her, both of you, and ask her which she likes best, brown curls or golden curls." Clarence was red-headed and freckled, and always laughing. He wore a blue suit buttoned all the way up the frontwith bright gilt buttons, and trimmed with braid, and he had copper-toedshoes. The soft moonlight came down through the treetops and made patches oflight and shade on the road ahead. The horses' hoofs made a cheerfulclippety-clop.

The Story of Grandpa's Sled and the Pig.

Uncle George began tobreathe loudly, and he wiped sweat off his forehead. But Pa began to play "The Arkansas Traveler," and everybody began toclap in time to the music. So Grandma bowed to them all and did a fewsteps by herself. Theclapping almost drowned the music of Pa's fiddle. Then Aunt Ruby and Aunt Docia put on their flannel petticoats and theirplain petticoats and their stiff, starched white petticoats with knittedlace all around the flounces. "Pull, Ruby, pull!" Aunt Docia said, breathless.

Ma ran with her into the house, and slammed the door. So Laura put on her coat and Ma buttoned it up. And Laura put her handsinto her red mittens that hung by a red yarn string around her neck, while Ma lighted the candle in the lantern. "Now run along and let Ma put you to bed," said Pa, and he took hisfiddle out of its box. "Did Adam have good clothes to wear on Sundays?" Laura asked Ma.

GOING TO TOWN.

This was a little bagwhich Ma had made beautifully of buckskin, from a buck Pa had shot. There would be a shining pile of them on the hearth before Pa stopped. He let them cool, then with his jack-knife he trimmed off the littlelumps left by the hole in the mold. He gathered up the tiny shavings oflead and saved them carefully, to melt again the next time he madebullets.

Cracklings were very good to eat, but Laura and Mary could have only ataste. They ate every little bit of meat off the bones, and then they gave thebones to Jack. Onions were made into long ropes, braided together by their tops, andthen were hung in the attic beside wreaths of red peppers strung onthreads. The pumpkins and the squashes were piled in orange and yellowand green heaps in the attic's corners. Now the potatoes and carrots, the beets and turnips and cabbages weregathered and stored in the cellar, for freezing nights had come.

The squirrels would be curled in their nests in hollowtrees, with their furry tails wrapped snugly around their noses. Thedeer and the rabbits would be shy and swift. Even if Pa could get adeer, it would be poor and thin, not fat and plump as deer are in thefall.

Pa shot the bear, and there was no way of knowing where the pig camefrom nor whose pig it was. "But I see," he said, "that either one of you has more sense than theman who cut the two cat-holes in his door." There were small traps and middle sized traps and great bear traps withteeth in their jaws that Pa said would break a man's leg if they shut onto it. When Butchering Time was over, there were the sausages and theheadcheese, the big jars of lard and the keg of white salt-pork out inthe shed, and in the attic hung the smoked hams and shoulders.

All around the house thewind went crying as though it were lost in the dark and the cold. Ma sat by the lamp, mending one of Pa's shirts. The house seemed coldand still and strange, without Pa. Just then one of the dancing little bits of light from the lanternjumped between the bars of the gate, and Laura saw long, shaggy, blackfur, and two little, glittering eyes. Laura was surprised to see the dark shape of Sukey, the brown cow, standing at the barnyard gate.

Aunt Lotty had gone, and Laura and Mary were tired and cross. They wereat the woodpile, gathering a pan of chips to kindle the fire in themorning. They always hated to pick up chips, but every day they had todo it.

Then she turned it upside-down over a plate, and pushed on thehandle of the loose bottom. The little, firm pat of golden butter cameout, with the strawberry and its leaves molded on the top. By the time the dishes were all wiped and set away, the trundle bed wasaired.

The Black soldiers of the Twenty-Fifth distinguished themselves in the Indian Wars. They opened the entire West to white settlers — without receiving any of their privileges — then served as the country’s first Park Rangers. In Wilder’s novel, the Osage are a troublesome feature of the landscape, not its landowners.

They made a big panful of mud, and plastered him all over with it. Theyrolled him up in an old sheet and put him to bed. His eyes were swollenshut and his nose was a funny shape. Ma and Aunt Polly covered his wholeface with mud and tied the mud on with cloths. Now Mary was oldest, and she wanted to play a quiet, ladylike play.

Charles and Caroline Ingalls never broke down like this, even though the same calamities and desolation assailed them. They shared worried looks, cried once in a blue moon, Pa yelled desperately at the blizzard “Howl! ” when Pa suggested he would go on a goose-chase for wheat across the prairie between the unpredictable blizzards. She was quiet but she was terrible.” Pa backed down and normalcy returned.

Then she rolled the sleeves of her flowered calico dress above herelbows, and she knelt by the tub. With her hands she rubbed and scrubbedthe corn until the hulls came off and floated on top of the water. "I think people say that, because it looks like a green cheese," shesaid. "But appearances are deceiving." Then while she wiped all thegreen cheeses and rubbed them with butter, she told them about the dead, cold moon that is like a little world on which nothing grows. Every morning she took the new cheese out of the press, and trimmed itsmooth.

Often she poured the water off, and filled the tub again with buckets ofwater from the spring. She kept on rubbing and scrubbing the cornbetween her hands, and changing the water, until every hull came off andwas washed away. Ma put the cubes into the big iron pot on the stove, poured in somewater, and then watched while the pumpkin slowly boiled down, all daylong.

Pa stopped the horses, and turned around on the wagon seat. Every night they had to wash their feet before they went to bed. Underthe hems of their skirts their ankles and their feet were as brown astheir faces. "Before night," Pa said, "we'll see the last of the sugar snow." There was a patty-pan, or at least a broken cup or a saucer, for everylittle girl and boy. They all watched anxiously while Grandma ladled outthe syrup.

As soon as they woke in the morning they ran to the window, but therewas no deer hanging in the trees. Pa had never before gone out to get adeer and come home without one. He was too tired that night to talk to Laura, but Laura was proud ofhim. It was Pa who had got the other men to stack their wheat togetherand send for the threshing machine, and it was a wonderful machine.Everybody was glad it had come.

One day, Pa is even able to harvest pails full of honey for the family. At Christmas, the family is visited by relatives. This fills up the house with fun, music, and more tales.

All around them he carved tiny leaves, and flowers, and birds. He said, "If you'd obeyed me, as you should, you wouldn't have been outin the Big Woods after dark, and you wouldn't have been scared by ascreech-owl." "Well," Pa said, "then your Grandpa went out into the yard and cut astout switch. And he came back into the house and gave me a goodthrashing, so that I would remember to mind him after that. "I ran with all my might. I ran till I couldn't breathe and still I kepton running. Something grabbed my foot, and down I went. Up I jumped, andthen I ran. Not even a wolf could have caught me.

First he melted the bits of lead in the big spoon held in the coals. When the lead was melted, he poured it carefully from the spoon into thelittle hole in the bullet-mold. He waited a minute, then he opened themold, and out dropped a bright new bullet onto the hearth. Every evening before he began to tell stories, Pa made the bullets forhis next day's hunting. They brought the big,long-handled spoon, and the box full of bits of lead, and thebullet-mold. Then while he squatted on the hearth and made the bullets, they sat one on each side of him, and watched.

Through thepretty calico that Pa had traded furs for. "I had passed it on my way to town that morning. It wasn't a bear atall. I only thought it was a bear, because I had been thinking all thetime about bears and being afraid I'd meet one." "So at last I looked around, and I got a good big club, a solid, heavybranch that had been broken from a tree by the weight of snow in thewinter. "I tried to hurry, but the walking was hard and I was tired, so I hadnot gone far before night came. And I was alone in the Big Woods withoutmy gun. The sun sank out of sight, the woods grew dark, and he did not come.

Of course, they were much smaller than the store. One of themwas made of new boards that had not had time to get gray; it was theyellow color of newly-cut wood. "Nor its Ma, nor its Pa. No more hunting, now, till all the little wild animals have grown up. We'll just have to dowithout fresh meat till fall." They looked lovely, sailing over the floor so smoothly with their large, round skirts. Their little waists rose up tight and slender in themiddle, and their cheeks were red and their eyes bright, under the wingsof shining, sleek hair.

Visiting Houmas House Plantation, LA: A Stunning Property Travel Blog

houmas house plantation and gardens

He began his young career in the grocery house of Talbot Jones in Baltimore. He quickly excelled, became a junior partner, and moved to Roanoke. John Burnside and Oliver Beirne, Andrew Beirne’s son, were the same age and matured together in Mr. Beirne’s business, becoming very close friends, a friendship that lasted through the years.

Build a Beautiful Wedding Album

It’s a very unique looking museum, so I’m sure it would be full of historical memorabilia and facts. Nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Louisiana, the Houmas House Plantation stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and grandeur. Head to The Turtle Bar for mint juleps or French 75s before dinner at The Carriage House Restaurant, which serves traditional Louisiana dishes with a contemporary twist.

All Available Tours

Read his entire reply on that link for all of the explanation. So I thought I would get that out of the way before I start this tour. If you feel the need to be ugly/negative about this post in the comments, I also reserve the right to delete comments. The Inn at Houmas House is a collection of quaint cottages nestled along an ancient oak alley and surrounded by lush gardens, allowing guests to get lost in the tranquility of the South. The Mighty Mississippi River is just steps away and a peaceful setting to watch the sun rise or set. The cottages depict historic structures that once graced Uncle Sam Plantation, which was located downriver from Houmas House.

What Hotels Are Near The Houmas House?

I looked up some critical reviews of the plantation and found this one where someone was wondering why Houmas House didn’t mention slavery more often. The reply back from Houmas House on Trip Advisor was very well stated and in my opinion, a good explanation of why they do not make slavery more prominent in their tours. I appreciated what they said, there are many other plantations you can visit where slavery is covered more fully in a reverent manner, and is much more a part of the tours.

Numerous out buildings, located just behind the main house, were demolished. They included an old kitchen, a pair of pigeonnieres, five large Moorish water cisterns, a school house, stables, green houses, service quarters and dozens of small service buildings. Dr. Crozat redesigned and remodeled the interior of the mansion then furnished the mansion with federal and early Louisiana antiques.

Our Experience at Houma House

We enjoyed our meal, the staff and the ambiance of the restaurant. Some of our favorite parts were the oriental gardens and the sculptures gardens. My wife and I visited the New Orleans area for our 12 year wedding anniversary and we ended our anniversary adventure at the Houmas House. Guests were delighted by the delectable charcuterie spreads and a wide selection of Cajun/creole favorites.

In 1803 Donaldson and Scott built a new center hall cottage directly in front of the1700’s French House. In 1829, General Wade Hampton began the task of enlarging the Donaldson Cottage and transforming it into the Classical Revival Mansion that stands today. For over 240 years, the Houmas Mansion has evolved and grew with the times and with the owners of the great mansion. The great colonnade has not changed since 1829, when General Hampton set out to build a mansion fitting for his wife, Mary Cantey Hampton. The house is stately and majestic inside and out, with period antiques, artwork and artifacts helping tell the story of plantation life.

History

Not only did these men fail to make it to the city and collect any money, something happened to all of them and none of their bodies were ever recovered. During that historic event, the area around Houmas House was inundated with water for weeks. The little girl in the blue dress does appear to be the figment of someone’s overactive imagination because her presence has been witnessed by many people at Houmas House. Read about some of my other favorite historical places to visit. So much so, that when a new owner bought the estate at an auction in 2003, he did an extreme makeover. The Houmas House was stripped, scraped, scrubbed and renovated from top to bottom.

The museum provides historical information about life on the Mississippi. The rooms provided a variety of artifacts across many decades and many styles. Each room was amazing to explore and our guide knew so much about everything. The food was delicious, they offer a mix of New Orleans style food, seafood and more. After a brief look around we checked into one of the cottages on the property of the Houmas House. Upon arriving at the Houma House we were immediately impressed with the gardens and everything that the Houmas House had to offer.

Luxurious cottage accommodations are also available for an overnight stay. Immerse yourself in a captivating landscape with sunlight filtering through majestic oaks, inviting you to explore a remarkable mansion. Louisiana’s River Road boasts the jewel of the 1840 Houmas House Plantation—a timeless attraction blending history and promise. Travel through time, envisioning the splendor it held and still exudes 250 years later. Houmas House remains a preeminent sugarcane plantation in Louisiana.

The charm of the house, the land and the stately old oak trees is eternal and so are the memories you will make there. Once a sprawling plantation of more than 300,000 acres, Houmas House is a magnificent historical landmark that has survived wars, floods, abandonment — and the test of time. The historic Houmas House showcases what life was like on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800s and provides insight on the families who once lived there. The gardens at Houmas House are a true feast for the senses. From the stunning collection of azaleas and camellias to the tranquil koi ponds and fountains, the gardens offer a serene escape into nature’s beauty.

We are on a Mississippi River Boat cruise, and this was one of our stops. There was also a very large gift shop and a great restaurant on the grounds. In its early years, Houmas House plantation had an oak alley leading from the river’s edge to the house. These “allees” were (and still are) common in Louisiana because the trees help funnel the cooler air from the river straight to the residence. Around 1900, another daughter of Houmas House died, this time on the plantation. Col. William Porcher Miles and his wife, Harriet, lost their daughter at the age of 7 to illness.

The lush flora and meticulously designed landscapes create a picturesque setting that is ideal for leisurely strolls and quiet contemplation. After the amazing tour we enjoyed a sunset stroll through the gardens. Houmas House Plantation boasts immaculate grounds with meticulously maintained landscaping.

The hotel also features a picnic area and complimentary WiFi in the public areas of the property. There are concierge services available to handle all guest needs. The Carriage House offers fine dining on the property in a beautiful room filled with historical artifacts and decor.

Kevin Kelly, a New Orleans Businessman, purchased the mansion and surrounding grounds and began the task of restoring the mansion and gardens. The mansion, having undergone over 200 years of construction and remodeling by various owners, reflected a multitude of styles. It was impossible to restore the house to a definite period without sacrificing elements from other important periods of its history.

Sculptures, exotic plants, and a Japanese footbridge adorn the expansive property, along with charming fountains. As you explore the premises, tranquility envelops you, offering a refreshing escape. The variety of blooming flowers and trees is simply breathtaking. If you don’t feel like walking, you can do a small group haunted history carriage tour and let the horse do all of the work.

Best Gardens in Louisiana

After we got all settled in we went for a stroll through the gardens. It was amazing to see so many different garden areas with a variety of sculptures, water features, plants and historic artifacts. Adding to the natural show performed by the property’s plant life, the property is dramatically decorated for the holidays, both inside and out. Other Haunted Plantations in Louisiana

In April of 1848, there were thirty family members and guests in residence at the Houmas, and just as many servants in the household. There was an abundance of beef and mutton from the plantation, as well as fruits and vegetables from the gardens. On a great curve of the Mississippi River and on high ground first selected by the Houmas Indians stand the great Tuscan columns of The Houmas. The mighty Mississippi River gave birth to this land over the millennium, creating the fertile lands which became the great fields of Sugar Cane, Cotton, Corn, Indigo, tobacco and more.

Top tips for your stay at Houmas House Plantation and Gardens

According to records, the young daughter of Col. John Preston was the belle of Houmas House in the mid 1800s. She played games of tag in the gardens and hide-and-seek in the great house until she fell gravely ill in 1848. But when the renovated house opened to the public, sightings of the little girl began again. Both guides and guests have seen her and say she seems curious about all the activity. The Houmas House Plantation is beautiful, but so are the haunting remains of a sugar plantation in Florida that was burned by the Seminoles in the 1830s. After our museum visit we packed up and took a view of the river before hitting the road home.

The crewman’s natural reaction was to express concern that a little girl was in a construction zone because it was not safe for children. Located near New Orleans, the 250-year-old house is just one of the estates located in Louisiana’s River Parishes that is open to the public. This particular live oak really caught my eye and I can’t even adequately share it here without lots of pics. It sprawled out from the mother tree way over to the building in the distance. She mentioned that the live oaks are from 600 to 700 years old. There’s a white tablecloth restaurant too called The Carriage House.

Choose Your Tour!

With its expansive gardens, stately mansion, restaurants and cottage, the Houmas House plantation also makes a wonderful wedding venue and is available for corporate events. When I had the opportunity to visit a beautiful River Road antebellum mansion, I had no idea I was going to be touring a haunted Louisiana plantation house and its grounds. To move at your own pace, opt for the self-guided tour of the gardens, where the seasons are reflected by the ever-changing plants and flowers.

The historic plantation now includes 38 acres of one of the South’s most beautiful gardens, as well as three restaurants and a luxury Inn. Despite the national economic depression and decline in plantation life, “The Gentlemen” stood as a reminder of a more opulent time. The 24 stately trees leading from the river to the house continued to stand guard and provide cooling breezes. The Houmas House also has an Inn with 21 rooms where Grandma can stay. Rooms average around $350/night and up, and included in the wedding package is a $60 credit per room per night. While hotels such as The Best Western and Supreme Inn and Suites are also nearby, out of town guests would most likely want to stay in the French Quarter, which is about an hour from the venue.

The Houmas House Plantation is located about 20 miles from Oak Alley Plantation, which is famous for its photographic appeal. A bridge on the property leads to the Mississippi River and provides sweeping views of the mighty river. Unfortunately 16 of the workers devised a scheme to profit from the large trees by floating the logs downriver to New Orleans.

If staying in New Orleans and seeking transportation, we suggest renting a car and visiting multiple plantations while seeing Houmas House. She was so knowledgeable and also shared stories that made us laugh. The gardens were amazing and actually were the prettiest we have seen so far.

In 2003 New Orleans businessman and preservationist Kevin Kelly acquired and refurbished the the Mississippi adjacent mansion and grounds. The property features 16 acres of manicured lawns, formal gardens, oak alleys, water-lily gardens, fountains and gardens, as well as Live Oaks are ranked amongst the oldest in the world. The Mansion at Houmas House is open for tours daily, seven days a week from 9 a.m. This particular Antebellum plantation house doesn’t cover slavery as much as some of the other houses in Louisiana. Oak Alley where I visited before, has rebuilt the slave cabins that once were part of the plantation grounds. They reverently share memorabilia and artifacts in these cabins, telling the stories of the slaves that once lived there.

During the 2020 Travel South Conference in Baton Rouge, I attended a private party at Houmas House Plantation. Houmas House, located in Darrow, Louisiana, graciously hosted us and provided an authentic Southern experience. The 38-acre property was even better with these talented musicians playing a variety of genres, such as zydeco and big band. Houmas House is a masterclass in horticulture, providing an opportunity to learn and appreciate the wonders of nature. The house is a stunning symmetrical antebellum structure featuring wrap-around decks on two floors, Federal arched dormers, majestic columns, and a decorative widow’s walk. Its allure is captivating, inspiring the desire to step inside or capture its beauty through the lens.

I wish I could give my dogs a space like this because then they’d finally stay off of my furniture and have a space for their toys. If you have the stair space this would be a fantastic option in my opinion. Though, if your smaller dogs are anything like mine, they love being as high up as possible.

In sharing these DIY dog house plans, I hope to inspire you to start this budget-friendly project. You’ll find that with a little effort and the right guidance, building a comfortable and affordable home for your dog is completely achievable. By using recycled wood and basic roofing materials, I managed to stick to a tight budget.

Free DIY Dog House Plans Anyone Can Build

In fact, you only have to shell out somewhere around $75, and you can go right ahead to build this beauty. This puppy camper dog house is super cute and perfect for those who have a liking to old school RVs. It’s a little tight, so this tiny abode is more suited to smaller canines. Designed to elevate from the ground for easy cleaning and water protection, it’s the perfect haven for your pet. Dive into this instructive, engaging project today and give your dog the mansion it deserves.

If your dog is outdoors even for a couple of hours at a time, chances are they either already have a doghouse or you're looking into building one. Unfortunately, many pre-built dog houses are quite costly, so looking for do-it-yourself building plans is often worth the research. Check out the free dog house plans listed below, plus a few tips to help your project turn out right. Detailed steps involve precise cutting of wood at angles for the legs and roof, ensuring structural integrity. The house features a waterproof plywood floor, easily supporting your dog’s weight, and walls with an angled cut for the perfect fit. Enhance your backyard and provide a cozy shelter for your pet with this simple yet effective dog house build.

Remember to measure twice, cut once, and handle tools with care for a professional finish that your pet will love. Yes, insulating your dog house is a great idea, especially in colder climates. You can line the walls with insulation materials before sealing them up. This will help keep your dog warm during cold nights and provide a cozy shelter. Don’t forget to add a removable door or heavy fabric flap over the entrance to keep out drafts.

Even better, there are many organizations that will give them away free-of-charge. DIY Craftsy offers a simple building plan utilizing pallets as building materials for your DIY dog house. They offer written instructions on their website, along with color photos, to aid you in putting it all together. By following our How to Build a Large Dog House guide, you’re well on your way to providing a loving, personalized home for your dog.

My little dogs are almost like cats in the way they sleep on the back of the couches and any other high area they can get to. But what really stands out to me with this dog house is the fact that your dog can have a pergola on the front of his or her house. It is great protection from the sun and makes their home pop with visual appeal too. However, it could also lay-out on the porch and enjoy the scenery while staying out of the elements as well. You’ve probably heard of a geometric greenhouse, but have you heard of a geometric dog house? Jennifer is a full-time homesteader who started her journey in the foothills of North Carolina in 2010.

To make this dog house weather tight, you can use a silicone caulk to join the 2 boards. For the walls, cut the 4′ x 4′ composite sheets into a half, making two 2′ x 4′ sheets, thus matching the “A-roof”. If you want the classic dog house design but with a bit more aesthetic flare, check out this modern take on the traditional dog house. Decorative trim around the sides of the house and at the peak of the roof pitch add sophistication to this familiar design. There’s also a large decorative nameplate where you can proudly display your dog’s name.

The supplies and materials you will need include ¾ plywood sheets (2), cedar shingles (1 pack), pallet wood, 2 x 4 trim (1), solar light (1), and Admiral Blue Paint. This list of dog house designs and plans includes indoor and outdoor dog houses both large and small. Many choose wood to build a dog house, as it’s easy to source and customize the size to suit your pet. Typically, it can cost a few hundred dollars in materials, but building it yourself can save hundreds of dollars in carpenter fees.

This one is a great option because the author claims it can be done for around $75. But what really stuck out to me is that she was able to create this unique masterpiece completely free by salvaging old materials. She gives you some of the details in her description of the dog house.

On December 12, 1977, President Carter signed Executive Order and formally established the Office of Administration within the Executive Office of the President. That Executive order was published in the Federal Register on December 14, 1977 (42 FR 62895). Transfers of records, property, personnel, and unexpended balances of appropriations to the Office of Administration became effective on April 1, 1978. The origins of the Office of Administration lie in Reorganization Plan No. 1 of 1977, which President James E. Carter prepared and transmitted to the Senate and House of Representatives on July 15 of that same year.

Each Vice President maintained an office in the Capitol, received staff support and office expenses through the legislative appropriations, and rarely was invited to participate in executive activities, including Cabinet meetings. In 1961, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson moved his chief office from the Capitol to the White House, directed his attention to executive functions, and started attending Senate sessions only at critical times. His actions changed the traditional role of the Vice President and his office, and those changes continue in effect today. Following his April 1789 inauguration, President George Washington occupied two private houses in New York City, which served as the executive mansion.

In the 1990s, Hillary Clinton, at the suggestion of the Visitors Office director, approved the addition of a ramp in the East Wing corridor, affording easier wheelchair access for the public tours and special events that enter through the secure entrance building on the east side. The President reaffirmed his ironclad commitment to Israel’s security following the successful defense against Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack earlier this month. The Office of the Vice President supports the Vice President's in his or her executive and legislative roles.

Since the administration of George Washington (1789–97), who occupied presidential residences in New York and Philadelphia, every American president has resided at the White House. Originally called the “President’s Palace” on early maps, the building was officially named the Executive Mansion in 1810 in order to avoid connotations of royalty. Although the name “White House” was commonly used from about the same time (because the mansion’s white-gray sandstone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings), it did not become the official name of the building until 1901, when it was adopted by Pres. The Kennedy restoration resulted in a more authentic White House of grander stature, which recalled the French taste of Madison and Monroe.[69] In the Diplomatic Reception Room, Mrs. Kennedy installed an antique "Vue de l'Amรฉrique Nord" wallpaper which Zuber & Cie had designed in 1834. The wallpaper had hung previously on the walls of another mansion until 1961 when that house was demolished for a grocery store. Just before the demolition, the wallpaper was salvaged and sold to the White House. Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy (1961–63), directed a very extensive and historic redecoration of the house.

The OMB's deputy director for management serves as the executive chair of the Council. The activities of the Director are subject to the direction or approval of the President. The Director organizes the Office of Administration, employs its staff, contracts for supplies and services, and carries out other duties that the President, as head of the Office, might do. In his or her capacity as the chief administrative officer of the Office, the Director ensures that it provides units within the Executive Office of the President with common administrative support and services. Under authority of the Reorganization Act of 1939, the President's two reorganization plans transferred various agencies to the Executive Office of the President.

Folks, my Administration has announced two new big steps to get American workers a better deal. Let me explain:

Following his inauguration in March 1801, Jefferson became the second president to reside in the executive mansion. In keeping with his ardent republicanism, he opened the house to public visitation each morning, a tradition that was continued (during peacetime) by all his successors. He personally drew up landscaping plans and had two earthen mounds installed on the south lawn to remind him of his beloved Virginia Piedmont. Meanwhile, construction continued on the building’s interior, which still lacked ample staircases and suffered from a persistently leaky roof.

The "Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States" indicates that NSC records have been assigned to record group 273. Within title 32, sections 2100–2199 constitute "Chapter XXI—National Security Council." Statutory subject matter affecting the Office of Environmental Quality is codified in "Chapter 56—Environmental Quality Improvement" of 42 U.S.C. Section 4372 is dedicated to the Office of Environmental Quality. Statutory subject matter affecting the Council on Environmental Quality is codified in "Chapter 55—National Environmental Policy" of 42 U.S.C. Sections 4341–4347 are dedicated to the Council on Environmental Quality. Council of Economic Advisers

The Bureau of the Budget was the forerunner of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The Office of Administration is exclusively dedicated to providing uniform administrative support and services to all units that constitute the Executive Office of the President—except for services that are provided primarily in direct support of the President. The Office does, however, upon request, assist the White House Office with providing administrative services that are primarily in direct support of the President (42 FR 62895). The NSC advises and assists the President, in conjunction with the National Economic Council, with the integration of all aspects of national security policy—domestic, economic, foreign, intelligence, and military—that affects the United States. Significant documents and documents that the CEQ recently published in the Federal Register are accessible online. The CEQ's Office of Federal Sustainability coordinates policy to promote energy and environmental sustainability across Federal Government operations.

The Office provides professional and administrative support for the Council. The CEQ and OEQ are referred to, collectively, as the Council on Environmental Quality. On January 1, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon approved Public Law 91–190, which also is cited as the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The Act established "a national policy for the environment" and provided "for the establishment of a Council on Environmental Quality" (83 Stat. 852). It created the Council (CEQ) in the Executive Office of the President. The CEQ is composed of three members, whom the President appoints by the advice and with the consent of the Senate.

The Biden-Harris Administration is responding to the public health and economic crisis that the COVID-19 outbreak continues to cause. The President is pushing for action by the Federal Government to help protect and support caregivers, families, first responders, small-businesses owners, and others whose health or economic stability has been affected adversely. The White House Office serves the President in the performance of the many detailed activities incident to his immediate office.

The "Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States" indicates that USTR records have been assigned to record group 364. The United States Trade Representative formulates trade policy for and directs all trade negotiations of the United States. The "Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States" indicates that OSTP records have been assigned to record group 364. The "Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States" indicates that OMB records have been assigned to record group 051.

On September 8, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an order that established five standing divisions of the Executive Office of the President and defined their functions and duties. We also request that gifts of a consumable nature, such as food, flowers, and other perishable items, not be sent to the White House due to the security screening process. Reagan approved Public Law 100–690 "to prevent the manufacturing, distribution, and use of illegal drugs, and for other purposes" (102 Stat. 4181). At the head of the new Office, the Act placed a Director who is assisted by a Deputy Director for Demand Reduction and a Deputy Director for Supply Reduction. The Act also created a Bureau of State and Local Affairs within the Office (102 Stat. 4181). The Office of National Drug Control Policy helps the President establish his National Drug Control Strategy objectives, priorities, and policies and makes budget, program, and policy recommendations affecting National Drug Control Program agencies.

Since then, with the magnificent talents of chef Cipriano Pita and staff, Heidi’s House has served delicious food, craft and imported beer and cider, and a nice selection of wines.
